Cruises—“Part of her World Travel” Cruise trips with Connie:

Connie was very adventurous. She took me along and gave me the opportunity of going to different parts of the world. She used to take interest in reading about which cruises are available from the University of Michigan, Harvard and Kellogg; these were the Universities which we were educated in. Of these, University of Michigan is supposed to have one of the best cruises; recently I heard Carleton has also started offering cruises. We took many cruises together; some of them were Norwegian, Caribbean, Alaskan, Tuscany and Finland. One of them I remember was from Budapest to Amsterdam. We also made some trips which were not cruises, for example we went to Black Mountains in Germany and France. We also made trips related to my business. During one of our trips to Rhine, Connie had a desire to go and take another trip which was from France, which would go through many countries, all the way up to Amsterdam. From Amsterdam, it would go further to Switzerland, from there to one more country where you would rest overnight in a hotel and return to United States of America next morning by flight. They also provided the option of adding extra stops if you wished, like we did in Norway. We flew with them and since we were part of the Advantage group, so we stayed four days in Bergen. It was such a wonderful thing, and a beautiful country. Connie and I were staying in the hotel with about 30 people. On the final day when we had to depart from Bergen back to Norway in a ship 98 more people joined us.

All these trips that I have mentioned above were not the kind of trips ordinary people make. The people that came on these trips were interested in learning and they were intellectual people. These trips are not just ordinary trips, there would be many lectures given at each and every stop by different professors about different Ryun and Daniel lakes. They would explain how the dams were constructed, how the water is controlled in Ryan and Daniel—most historical sight in Europe how they have to match and control the water. It is a magnificent thing to see how the York men have controlled the water system. In addition to the beautiful sight seeing, the lectures, there would also be beautiful sightseeing in small boats which carry 120 or 130 passengers only. The tourists on these trips were intellectual people from the Universities who have graduated in different years and mostly seniors; there were no kids and only very bright people and professors. There were doctors, professors, banking and finance professionals and teachers. We would share common tables during breakfast. We would sit with different people for every meal, so we could have stimulating conversation with different people. Sightseeing would also be done with different groups. In the buses the drivers, coaches and guides would guide us and they would tell us the history.
